MABEL POPE

Mabel Pope (b.2003) is a recent graduate of BA(Hons) Painting & Printmaking from The Glasgow School of Art. She uses her practice as a tool for storytelling, to map out the passing of time and document the environments she inhabits. It is a celebration of the everyday.

Over the past year, she has explored the parallels and differences between her surroundings throughout the seasons, Summer by the sea, Autumn at her family home in Herefordshire and Winter in her flat in Glasgow. Through drawing and video, she creates a visual journal of her findings; documenting adventures and micro-adventures, the domestic sphere, the intimacy of a home, dusky cityscapes, the richness of rural life and the abundance of the vegetable garden. These drawings are then developed into paintings and sculptures in the studio, using deep but vibrant tones and lyrical markmaking.

Drawn to the act of noticing and preserving, she like to extend the lives what what she sees, viewing her paintings as postcards or mementos of fleeting moments, so she doesn’t forget. Embracing a hands-on approach, she is resourceful, often reusing and working with found materials.
